Nutrients that Support Eye Health

Ocular Vitamins

The sale of vitamins and dietary supplements has grown into a $27 billion industry.  A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control found a little over half of the adult population in the U.S. takes at least one vitamin or dietary supplement mostly in the form of a multivitamin.  Advertisements abound with claims for vitamins, minerals, and herbs to improve the health of every part of the body including the eye.

So can vitamin supplements improve ocular health?

As usual, the answer is not so straightforward.  First, the eye requires certain vitamins and minerals for it to function properly.  For example, vitamin A is necessary for the retina to function properly.  Thiamine is necessary for the optic nerve to transmit information from the eye to your brain.  However, most of us receive more than enough of these vitamins in our diet.  While a minimum amount of vitamins are necessary for proper function, an excess amount does not improve function.
In 2001, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) released their findings detailing the effects of high doses of antioxidants and zinc on patients with age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.  The AREDS study was a well designed, prospective, placebo controlled study that followed 3600 people for over 6 years.
The AREDS study found no effect on the development of cataracts. The study found a significant reduction in the progression of macular degeneration in patients with intermediate and advanced macular degeneration.  This was great news because until this point there was no treatment for patients with age-related macular degeneration.  It is now standard of care to recommend the AREDS formulation of antioxidants and zinc to patients with intermediate and advanced macular degeneration. The study found no benefit for patients with early macular degeneration or no evidence of macular degeneration.
A study called AREDS II was initiated in 2006 and is currently ongoing that will look at the effects of lutein, xanthophylls, and omega-3 fatty acids on patients with macular degeneration.  The results have not been released yet, but a smaller study called the Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST) has demonstrated improvement in 90 patients with age-related macular degeneration taking lutein supplements over the course of one year.
In 2005, data from the Women’s Health Study (WHS) found a correlation of low intake of dietary omega-3 fatty acids among women who reported dry eye syndrome.  A small scale but prospective, randomized, placebo controlled and double-masked study published in 2011 in Cornea found increased tear production and volume in 36 patients with dry eye syndrome who supplemented their diet with omega-3 fatty acids.  As a result many doctors, including myself, are now recommending omega-3 fatty acid supplements as part of the treatment regimen for patients with dry eye syndrome.

Conclusion: Myth Confirmed

While there is little evidence vitamins and dietary supplements improve vision in patients without any medical problems, in patients with age-related macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome vitamins and supplements have been shown to be helpful.  In the care of age-related macular degeneration, vitamins have become the standard of care.

Nutrients that Support Eye Health

Home remedies on how to improve your eyesight naturally also involves eating a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits which contain essential vitamins for our eyes. Colored vegetables like carrots and pumpkin promote general health. Dietary supplements especially vitamins C, E, zinc and Omega 3 fatty acids are also effective. Herbs rich in antioxidants such as asparagus or rooibos also help to improve eyesight.
There are a number of nutrients which are known to promote eye health and improve eyesight. A balanced diet is important for eye health, but special attention must be paid to the foods that contain the needed nutrients and minerals. Some of these are:
  • Lutein:  Good sources are broccoli, papayas, Brussels sprouts, zucchini and romaine lettuce
  • Chromium: This can be found in onions, tomatoes, spinach and bananas
  • Vitamin A: This is found in kale, broccoli, sweet potato, pumpkin, leafy vegetables, eggs and spinach
  • Zinc:  The best sources are found in meat such as beef, pork and chicken, milk, cheese, wholegrain cereals, potatoes and yogurt
  • Selenium: Good sources include Brazil nuts, tuna, salmon, shrimp, halibut, cod and shiitake mushrooms
  • Vitamin E: Found in eggs, avocado, milk, spinach, wheat germ, nuts, asparagus and vegetable oil
  • Vitamin C: Sources include oranges, potatoes and strawberries

Herbs and Spices for Eye Health
Some herbs and spices which have been shown to positively impact eye health include:
  • Dill: This herb is rich in beta-carotene and lutein
  • Turmeric: This is another excellent source of vitamins A, C and E. It has antioxidant properties and is used to help lower the risk of developing cataracts
  • Bilberry: Used to help strengthen the capillaries in the eyes thus improving blood flow
  • Oregano: Loaded with the eye friendly vitamin E
  • Grape seed extract: Believed to have the ability to strengthen the capillaries and is also thought to be good for peripheral vision
  • Eyebright: This herb’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a great choice for soothing eye baths.

Eye health experts also recommend wearing shades in bright sunlight to help prevent cataracts later in life. If you spend a lot of time reading or in front of the computer it is important to take frequent breaks to rest your eyes. Washing eyes with cold water also helps to keep them bright. Women who wear makeup should ensure that it is removed before they go to bed. In addition, to help protect the eyes, eye makeup should be replaced if the consistency and smell changes. There is also a rule of thumb that mascara should ideally be replaced every three months.

Getting enough sleep also helps reduces strain on the muscles and enhances focusing power of lenses. Finally, avoid stress and embark on proper eye care since this is the only way of improving your eyesight naturally.

Relieve Computer Eye Strain

by Dr. Jourdan Javalera

With the correct eye care program that includes eye exercises, and proper diet and supplementation, you can significantly effect and even improve your vision.

Computers & Vision

More than 50 percent of computer users experience eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and other visual symptoms related to sustained use of the computer. This type of stress on the visual system can also cause body fatigue and reduced efficiency at work. In addition, there are now indications that heavy computer users are at risk for glaucoma.

We were born to have hunters' eyes, needed for spotting game or danger at a distance. But during the last 50 years nearly all our work and much of our recreation, for example, video games, has shifted the focus of our vision to arm's length. This increased amount of near visual tasks often produces such changes as nearsightedness, suppressed vision in one eye, poor eye teaming and reduced efficiency at work and at play.
Many computer users experience visual stress due to: 1) an increase in the number and complexity of necessary eye movements and focusing skills, 2) poor lighting conditions, glare and distracting reflections, 3) screen flicker rate, and 4) above all, the extended amount of computer use.

Computer Stress Checklist:

Computer visual stress may underlie many direct and indirect symptoms. Eyestrain is a common direct symptom, while the need for shifts in posture and muscular strain resulting from poorly arranged work stations cause eye problems indirectly and other physical problems directly.

Direct Computer Stress Symptoms

  • headaches while doing or following computer use
  • irritated and/or dry eyes
  • blurred vision
  • slow refocusing when looking from screen to distance objects
  • frequently losing place when moving eyes between copy and the screen
  • difficulty seeing clearly at a distance after prolonged computer use
  • occasional doubling of vision
  • changes in color perception
  • changes in glasses prescription

Other Computer Stress Symptoms

  • neck or shoulder tension and pain
  • back pain
  • pain in arms, wrists, or shoulders when working on the computer
  • lowered visual efficiency and more frequent errors

Your Eye Examination For Computer Use

Due to the unique characteristics and high visual demands of computer work, computer users should have a comprehensive eye examination periodically. Your examination should include:
  • A general eye and health history
  • Screening for glaucoma
  • A specific history relating to computer work. Be prepared to describe the type of computer work you do, the number of hours, the time of day you usually work on the computer, the size, type and color of your screen and screen characters, positions and work distances in your workstation, the lighting in the room, and the type severity and frequency of any symptoms you're having.
  • A measurement of your visual acuity at distance and near
  • Do an evaluation of your internal and external eye health
  • A measurement of possible prescriptions for distance and near working distances
  • An assessment of eye focusing ability
  • An evaluation of eye coordination and eye movement skills
  • If the results of your examination indicate your eye doctor may do additional tests based on your specific needs.

Complementary Approaches To Help Reduce Computer Visual Stress

The following self-help points are helpful.

Relaxing Eye Exercises

You can watch our short video demonstration

Palming

The palming exercise will teach you to relax your eyes, which in turn will bring healthy energy to your eyes.
  • First, rub your hands together until they feel warm (about 15 to 20 seconds). Then place your cupped hands over your closed eyes, being careful not to touch your eyes with the palms of your hands. The fingers of each hand should overlap and rest gently on the center of your forehead. Don't create any unnecessary pressure on your face. If your arms get tired, rest your elbows on a table.
  • Sit quietly for one to two minutes with your hands over your eyes. The more relaxed you become, the blacker the darkness you will see with your eyes closed.

Near-far focus

This exercise improves eye flexibility:
  • Hold your thumb six inches from your nose.
  • Focus on your thumb.
  • Take one deep breath and exhale slowly.
  • Then focus on an object about 10 feet away.
  • Take another deep breath and slowly exhale.
  • Repeat back and forth 15 times

Scanning

  • This exercise helps you increase the flexibility of your eyes.
  • Sitting or standing at one end of a room, let your eyes scan around the edges of objects in the room - clocks, televisions, doors, lights, computers, etc.
  • The object of this exercise is to keep your eyes moving in a loose and fluid way.
  • Do this exercise for two minutes.
  • Remember to breathe.

Head Rolls

This exercise is to relax your neck, head and face muscles and reduce shoulder tension.
  • Take a deep breath and close your eyes.
  • On the exhale, slowly drop your chin to your chest. Relax your neck and shoulders.
  • As you inhale deeply again, slowly and gently roll your head around to the left, then back, keeping your shoulders still and relaxed.
  • Make your movements slowly, carefully and deliberately.
  • Now exhale full as you roll your head to the other side and down to your chest again.
  • Repeat this sequence twice then change directions and repeat twice more.

Hydrotherapy

  • Place a bowl of hot water and a bowl of cold water in front of you. The hot water should be hot but not so hot that it burns you. The cold water should be ice cold, so either put ice cubes in it or get it out of the refrigerator.
  • Put a wash cloth in each bowl.
  • Place the wash cloth from the bowl of hot water against your closed eyes for 30 seconds.
  • Then do the same with the wash cloth from the bowl of cold water.
  • Continue to alternate the hot and cold wash cloths.
  • Finish by gently massaging your closed eyes with a dry towel.
  • Do this for two minutes.

What have you got to lose?
By Charlie Xie, Marc 25, 2011
Over the last 10 – 15 years there has been a marked increase in the number of people who wear glasses and contact lenses. This can be put down to drastically increased computer useage both at home and at work, and increased television watching. Good news for opticians around the world – bad news for us, but it needn’t be!
Our eyes need regular exercise in order to keep them healthy, just like any other muscle in the body. The thing is, we take it for granted that our eyes will eventually give up on us and we will eventually need glasses or contact lenses. This doesn’t have to be the case if you regularly exercise your eyes. Also, if you start wearing glasses or contact lenses your eyesight will only get worse over time rather than get better as your eyes will get used to the new lenses and need even stronger lenses to function properly. Everybody who wears glasses and contacts will tell you their eyes have gradually got worse over time but they have put it down to their eyesight getting worse which is not necessarily the case.
This may sound quite controversial to some people and a lot of people are opposed to this advice when I have given it. Opticians are people of some authority so why would someone listen to me rather than someone who has had years of training and years of experience and have big fancy machines to test your eyes. Simple answer is that 90% of opticians would not be required if everybody done some sort eye exercise on a daily basis.
Of course there are exceptions and a lot of people might need glasses or contacts due to congenital problems or some kind of trauma however I believe most people who wear glasses do not need them or did not need them in the first place.
I use the computer at home and at work for an average of 9 hours per day and do not need glasses. This is only because I have resisted listening to opticians who advised I need them. Instead I have exercised my eyes and after a few weeks of exercising my eyes, they have returned back to normal vision.
I know I will get a lot of abuse for this post but I stand by what I am saying and advise you, if you are a glasses wearer or contact lenses wearer to try the exercises for a few weeks and let me know how you get on. What have you got to lose?

Do bother!!
By  Laura Anthony , July 12, 2011

15 years with glasses and lenses, 1998 with strain and headaches all day. A major turning point for me came after buying How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book  Jan 2011. I am now rid of the headaches and on my way to get rid of the glasses. Gone down from -3.5 to -2.0.If I had listen to my eye doctor that would have been years of trying different lenses to cure the headaches. I'd already spent one year with no result.
My best investment ever!

Has some good things to say, but it's not the Bates Method.
By Rich Rosenberg , July 25, 2011

First I applaud the authors of this book for having the courage to deviate from the traditional thinking of their peers in the field of eye care. That said, I feel that the authors are still too ensconced in some of these old ways of thinking. For example, they state that becoming nearsighted after 40 is virtually inevitable. I am in my mid-40s and have had no indication of this even beginning to occur. In addition, how can this be so when many using the Bates Method have never had this condition, or have reversed it well after the age of 40?
The book (How To Improve Eyesight Naturally) has some good things to say and some of the drills are worth while. It is certainly worth a look. However, my first recommendation is for the books by Bates and Quackenbush. My eyesight in each eye was worse than 20/200 when I started the Bates Method about a month ago, and now I can read the 20/70 line on the Snellen Chart most of the time.

Good book on eye exercise
By Sarah McMillian, July 30, 2011

I would recommend this How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book to anyone who wants to improve eyesight. The book is straightforward with complete instructions on the eye exercises. It is true that everyone can improve one's eyesight by doing eye exercise. Although the method does work, it takes time. Don't expect a quick fix. You have to be patient and persistent. I think the book has exaggerated the speed of results. I believe, for someone who has low a prescription, they can improve to see perfectly in a short period of time because I saw a big improvement in my vision for the first 3 months after I did the exercise. However, it levels off. To reduce a high prescription like me, it is slow. In my case, I was -8.75. After expressing for a year and half, my vision has been reduced to -7. I am still doing it believing that I will one day, many years from now, do not have to wear contacts.
Don't make eye surgery or laser operation BUT !Buy this book instead.

From -12.75 to -10.75 in 2 1/2 months!
By Theodore 'Teddy' Bremmer (Arlington, TX United States), August 9, 2011

I started doing these eye exercises on June 1, 2011. After a week of very gently doing the recommended progressive myopia booster sequence listed in the How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book, I was unable to wear my strongest power contacts and glasses. It HURT to put them on. So out came my 1994 contacts and glasses. They weren't strong enough, but at least it didn't hurt to wear them.
After doing some (not all) of the eye exercises in this book for 2 1/2 months I finally went in to see the optometrist. The results of the eye exercises were a definite improvement; from -12.75 in the right eye to a -10.75, and -12 in the left eye to -9.75. And this after only doing some of the exercises from How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book a half an hour 3 days a week. I can hardly wait to see what happens when I do more of the exercise techniques! Makes me wonder what kind of eyesight I would have had if my eye doctor had prescribed eye exercises at age 8 instead of thick glasses. My only criticism about this book is that explanation of how and why the exercises work would be nice.
If you are truly interested in improving your vision, buy this How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book and use it. It works.

Doing anything takes commitment
By John Young (Calgary AB Canada), September 2, 2011

This book has a great method for anyone who is interested in improving their vision at all. Just remember that it has taken years in many cases for peoples' vision to worsen to the point that they are at, and it's going to take time (several months at the least) before you're going to see significant improvement. I'm sure that many of the people who have reviewed this book saying they didn't get good results probably took shortcuts and skipped a few of the more difficult or time-consuming exercises. The How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book is a tool to help you help yourself - just blindly doing the exercises without commitment or confidence won't help you, and neither will taking shortcuts. Follow the techniques carefully and thoroughly and read the entire book through at least twice, carefully.
As tedious as it is reading the book and doing exercises, it is necessary if you want to do anything about your vision. It's a program that you have to integrate into all aspects of your life, and in my experience so far it is taking more than 30 minutes a day - it occupies a bit more than that considering the exercises you are to do on the side. Overall, I have yet to be a better programmed, and if you truly care about seeing naturally without your glasses and if you are truly committed to devoting your time and energy to your eyes, this book (How To Improve Eyesight Naturally) will surely help you.

important info, highly recommended
By  Michael Abed  , November 8, 2011

This book is informative, interesting, and to the point. It is easy to read with no fluff. Hence the reader can grasp basic concepts and start doing the eye improving methods immediately.
Vision therapy is not just eye exercises. It includes correct eyesight habits. Once you understand how the eye was intended to be used, all of the info in the How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book will make sense. Furthermore "good eyesight" is much more than just the ability to see near and far. The book will educate you about other traits that are important.
I only wish that the author had included some benchmark technique for measuring one's eye condition improvement.
My own improvement was revealed when I lost my glasses and had to get a new pair. The optometrist remarked that my prescription had improved, and asked me if I had been doing anything different. I had been practicing vision therapy for almost a year.
That is the first time in my life that my prescription improved.
Also my night vision has improved, I can wear my glasses much less than before, and I have been able to diffuse that blurry/dizzy effect when spending lots of time on the computer or reading books for long periods of time.
I highly recommend How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e- book for those who want to take an active role in improving their eye condition.

Natural alternative to glasses: and it works!
By Kip Bryan (Boston, Massachusetts), January 15, 2012

I had read many books on natural vision improvement and tried many things before I found How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book. It gives easy instructions for simple techniques that actually improved my nearsightedness. If you've ever wondered why your vision got worse even when you followed the eye doctor's advice, this book is for you.
I'd have preferred literature references or deeper theoretical explanations for some of the techniques, but I can understand that it was meant to be short and sweet. I wish I'd learned this when I was 10!

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING
By Carlos Fernández, February ,11, 2012

I bought How To Improve Eyesight Naturally book a while back whilst still in London. This book is absolutely amazing. The information is accurate and concise. I was at -4.25 in each eye and went to -3.00 in a month, just by doing the exercises for 30 minutes daily! I know others with worse conditions who have done the exercises for 2 hours a day and improved dramatically (-6 to -2 in 6 weeks! ) Also once reading this information I actually had a discussion with my optometrist- He eventually admitted that it was possible using the information in this book that someone can fix their eyesight!
BUY THIS BOOK BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, USE IT!

This book will revolutionize the optometry industry, if read
By William Ash , Marc 13, 2012

This book is very outspoken about the inadequate practices that's going on in the optometry industry. Eye doctors do not want people to know what you will learn in this book, for they fear that they will go out of business.
Shortsighted thinking.?!
I've already recommended How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e- book to over 20 people among families and friends. One friend, after only 2 weeks of doing the exercises, noticed that he was able to read the fine print on the shampoo bottle while showering. Excited, he went to his eye doctor for a re-examination. The doctor said that there was a dramatic reduction of the myopic state of his eye. His new prescription was reduced by .75 in both eyes. The left was reduced from -3.00 to -2.25 and the right eye was reduced from -2.50 to -1.75.
In my case, after 3 months of exercises, my objective myopic measurement reduced from -2.25 in the left eye to -1, and -2.00 in the right eye to -1.
When I discovered vision therapy I was outraged, because I particularly asked my eye doctor on several occasions if there's anything that he can recommend that will prevent my eyes from getting worse, and he said "No".
That is the same doctor I went back to for a re-examination because I wanted to confront him with the issue. He attempted to give me a referral to a behavioral optometrist, but I told him that I wanted him to examine my eyes to see the improvement I got by using the AVI Method, the Bates Method, and the Janet Goodrich Methods. While examining my eyes, he admitted that my vision had improved significantly to 20/70. It was about 20/400 progressing to 20/800.
You'll never regret reading How To Improve Eyesight Naturally book. If you use glasses or know ANYONE who uses glasses, please tell about this book. People should not have to pay to go blind or to be kept in ignorance. Doctors are here to help us get better nor worse. This book helps your vision get better.
Finally, direct ALL of your friends and relatives to a behavioral optometrist. They are the ones who deserve to be paid, because they are trying to get you off glasses not hooked on it.
This is not the end! When I get my vision back to 20/20 there's going to be a big noise in the land regarding the practice of optometry. I will help the author who wrote this book tell the whole world the truth about the practice of traditional optometrist and the alternative methods available

Great book - It works! But there's a catch...
By  Eli Okun  (Florida), April 18, 2012

Actually, there are two catches:
1) You need the discipline to do the vision therapy (VT) exercises religiously every day, or at least a few times a week.
2) You need an optometrist who will agree to support you and give you progressively under corrected lenses. (This, of course, takes some $, although optometrists who believe in this technique will probably work with you and offer discounts).

I bought this book from an alternative health expo in my city last summer and played around with some of the exercises, but I knew that, although my myopia might stabilize, I wouldn't see any improvement unless I found an optometrist willing to give me under corrected lenses. I finally found one (to my knowledge he's the only behavioral optometrist in my area), using the following site: http://www.babousa.org/doctors/default.asp

I went to my first appointment with him five weeks ago, and he said that my eyes had not changed from my lenses at the time of -5.75 and -5.50 (I believe the exercises up to that point helped to stabilize me). He agreed to under correct me to -5.25 in both eyes, if anything to relieve near point stress even if I didn't do VT, and I committed to doing the VT exercises out of this book on my own.
I did the exercises for 15 to 30 minutes every evening, and noticed a dramatic improvement in the first two weeks, after which I stabilized. I know this because the book instructs you to measure your "blur zone," the point for myopes at which things become blurry, from the bridge of your nose every week to see your progress. I started out at 5-1/2 inches. After two weeks, I was at 6-3/4 inches - an improvement of 1-1/4 inches! My follow-up appointment wasn't for another three weeks after that, and during that time, I didn't see any further improvement in blur zone measurement, although I continued doing the exercises. This past Thursday, I went back to my optometrist, and he said that I was seeing 20-20 through my new lenses, and thought I might even be a little over-corrected now. It seems the reason I stopped improving after two weeks was that I had already reached the best I could with the lenses I had. He has under corrected me again, this time more aggressively, to -4.5. I have a follow-up with him again in about a month.

I don't know how far I can get with this, and I know that eventually I will reach a "plateau." However, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to continue improving over the long term if I stick with the exercises. Maybe it will be a year, maybe two, but I'm determined enough to continue doing them. Even if I stop improving, the exercises, as the How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book states, are just plain good for the health of your eyes, whether you intend to improve your vision or not.

I highly recommend this book and its exercises to anyone who is interested and serious about improving their vision naturally. Here's one final tip:
I think all of the exercises helped me immensely, but the single one that I could tell was working as I was doing it was the "blur zoning." Placing a detailed object, such as a simple picture, *just inside* my blur zone, even moving it very slowly just into my clear zone, and then back over the "threshold" into my blur zone, and gently looking at it and allowing my eyes to adapt to it helped the most, I think. This process takes "baby steps," so if you choose to do this, stick with it and be patient. Good luck!

Buy This Book!
By  Pamela Williams , (USA) , April 28, 2012

I have had this book for awhile now but I have been lazy about actually putting a lot of effort into the practice. I can just be lazy. But even so, with the little effort I have put into doing the exercises I have seen my sight improve.
To others it might not be anything miracle worthy but to me it means a lot. When I first started I could not even seen the computer screen clearly without my glasses or contacts. Now I can sit at my desk and productively work without them. And the clarity keeps improving. This How To Improve Eyesight Naturally e-book teaches you how to see again the proper way and teaches you about the eyes. I have asked a few eye doctors over the years why eye sight fails and they have been honest enough to admit they honestly don't really know. I appreciate their honesty but is this good science? This book gives answers, which you may be surprised to learn are not new just ignored. For the price this book is definitely worth buying. The information on the eyes and the exercises which will make your eyes feel healthier and not so tired and stressed are well worth it even if your eyesight never improves, which I believe if you even try it will. Don't expect fast results though. Progress may be slow, but if you stick with it you just might be well rewarded.

How To Correct Your Eyesight Without Expensive Surgery Or Painful Contact Lenses
The eyes play a large role in one’s independence and sense of well-being and good eyesight is a reflection of good health as the majority of senses the body receives are attributed to the eyesight. As you progressively age, the clarity of the vision gradually decrease and this can be attributed mainly to eye strain and aliments. The introduction of the computer in our lifestyle gas actually accelerated these problems due to the long hours spent staring at the computer screen. However, people can still have clear vision by either wearing lenses or glasses. But there are certain measures that you can take to overcome blurred vision in a holistic manner.

Some people use Vision therapy (eye exercises ) while others use foods and herbs or a combination of both.

What is  the Vision therapy ?
Vision therapy, also known as vision training, is used to improve vision skills such as eye movement control, eye focusing and coordination, and the teamwork of the two eyes. It involves a series of procedures carried out under professional supervision, usually by a specially-trained optometrist.
Vision therapy can be prescribed when a comprehensive eye examination indicates that it is an appropriate treatment option for the patient. The specific program of therapy is based on the results of standardized tests, the needs of the patient, and the patient's signs and symptoms. Programs typically involve eye exercises and the use of lenses, prisms, filters, occluders, specialized instruments, and computer programs.
The course of therapy, which may take from several weeks to several months if you do these exercises daily and that your eyesight would improve over time, is closely monitored by the therapist.

Important information about eye strain

By Dr. Jourdan Javalera

What is eye strain?

The term eye strain is frequently used by people to describe a group of symptoms which are related to use of the eyes. Eye strain is a symptom, not an eye disease. Eye strain occurs when your eyes get tired from intense use, such as driving a car for extended periods, reading, or working at the computer. If you have any eye discomfort caused by looking at something for a long time, you can call it eye strain.
Although eye strain can be annoying, it usually is not serious and goes away once you rest your eyes. In some cases, signs and symptoms of eye strain are a sign of an underlying eye condition that needs treatment. Although you may not be able to change the nature of your job or all the factors that can cause eye strain, you can take steps to reduce eye strain.

What causes eye strain?

The medical term for eye strain is asthenopia. The symptoms of ocular fatigue, tired eyes, blurring, headaches, and occasionally doubling of the vision are brought on by concentrated use of the eyes for visual tasks. Some people, while concentrating on a visually intense task such as reading fine print, using the computer for hours at a time, or trying to see in the dark, unconsciously clench the muscles of their eyelids, face, temples, and jaws and develop discomfort or pain from use of those muscles. This may lead to a vicious cycle of tensing those muscles further and causing more distress. Other people attempting to do similar visual tasks may have no symptoms at all.
Common precipitating factors for the onset of eye strain include extended use of a computer or video monitor, straining to see in very dim light, and exposure to extreme brightness or glare. Many people will blink less than normal when performing extended visual tasks. This decreased blinking may lead to dryness of the ocular surface and symptoms of dry eyes.
Refractive errors (a need for glasses for distance or near vision, or both) may produce the symptoms of eye strain. People who require glasses, however, often do not develop asthenopia even when they fail to wear their glasses.
The inability to make both eyes work together in a binocular fashion may also generate the symptoms of eye strain. However, most individuals who have limited or no binocular vision have no such symptoms.
In people who already have headaches or blurring of vision due to eye strain, symptoms may be worsened by an underlying eye problem such as an eye muscle imbalance or a need for glasses for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.
In those who already have eye strain, not getting enough sleep, certain medications, being under stress, or being fatigued can also make those symptoms worse.

What are the symptoms of eye strain?

If one asks patients who complain of eye strain to define what they mean by that term, they may describe nonspecific soreness of the eyes, mild tearing or dryness, blurring of vision, soreness of the back of the neck, doubling of vision, light sensitivity, difficulty focusing on images, tightness of the temples or back of the head, or combinations of all of these. Headache is the most common symptom. It is usually mild, located in both temples, not pounding, and often relieved by stopping the visual task.

What are the signs of eye strain?

The diagnosis of eye strain is made by a physician on the basis of the history as described by the patient and the absence of any serious eye disease. There are no specific tests to prove that the symptoms are indeed due to eye strain. There are no methods to objectively measure the degree of eye strain.
You should see an ophthalmologist if you have ongoing pain in the eye, visual loss, redness, or irritation of the eyes. These symptoms cannot be explained by eye strain. In general, if your eye strain is not relieved by resting your eyes, an eye examination should be performed. If you are examined by your ophthalmologist for your symptoms of eye strain, he or she will do an examination, including checking to see if you need glasses. If the doctor feels glasses may make your eyes more comfortable, these will be prescribed.
Symptoms of eye strain are unusual in children under 12 years of age. If your child complains of headaches after reading, eye fatigue, blurring of vision, or double vision, a visit to an ophthalmologist is warranted to rule out any underlying eye condition.

How is eye strain diagnosed?

Eye strain is diagnosed on the basis of the history that the patient provides and the absence of any serious eye disease.

What is the treatment for eye strain?

Eye strain is extremely common, occurring in as many as 70% of people who perform extended visual tasks. As computer use has become commonplace, more people are experiencing what has been termed "computer vision syndrome," which is synonymous with eye strain. In most of these people, the symptoms are mild and they are aware that their feelings of the eyes being "tired" can be relieved by briefly closing their eyes and taking a break from the visual task they are performing.
Although eye strain is uncomfortable, there are no long-term consequences of eye strain. There is no evidence that eye strain causes any adverse changes in the eyes. There is also no evidence that, in adults, continuing to do visual tasks while experiencing eye strain will result in any structural damage to the eyes.
Eye strain, however, can be unpleasant and disruptive to your ability to concentrate and work. The symptoms of eye strain may lead to physical fatigue, decreased productivity, and increased numbers of work errors.
If you feel that you are experiencing eye strain after extended reading, try to adjust your lighting to maximize illumination while minimizing glare, take frequent brief breaks from the visual task, and consciously blink a few extra times. Firmly massaging the temples with your fingers in a rotary fashion for a minute while closing your eyes is often helpful in relieving the symptoms.
If you experience eye strain while working at your computer, increasing the resolution of your screen (CRT) and reducing ambient lighting may be helpful. Adjusting the distance of your eyes from both the computer screen and your reading material may also relieve your symptoms. Changing brightness and contrast levels on your monitor and increasing text size can also be advantageous. Massaging the temples with your eyes closed for a minute may alleviate the symptoms. Rather than keeping your eyes focused on the computer screen for hours at a time, interrupt this process by briefly looking out of the window or around the room.
When performing extended visual tasks of all sorts, occasionally stand up, move about and stretch your arms, legs, back, neck, and shoulders.
If the symptoms of eye strain are predominantly those of dryness and increasing your blink frequency is not helpful, using an over-the-counter tear substitute a few times a day can be efficacious.
If all these home treatments don't work to relieve your eye strain symptoms, see your ophthalmologist.

Can eye strain be prevented?

Once you recognize that your symptoms are caused by eye strain, you can usually modify the task that produces the eye strain sufficiently to reduce or eliminate the eye strain.

My story with How To Improve Eyesight Naturally program

Introduction:

In 2011, I decided to find out for myself whether eye exercises really work - so I purchased the most popular course online,  How To Improve Eyesight Naturally.
I've since reviewed half a dozen other courses in the making of this website. This one remains my favorite for its efficacy and ease of use. It guarantees dramatic eyesight improvement within 60 days or your money back.
Firstly, I'll explain what eye exercises are and exactly how they work. Then I'll share my personal results with them.

Quick Summary of My Experience

If you don't have time to read my whole story, I'll summarize it here in a nutshell. Before embarking on this course, I started out with nearsightedness of -3.25/-3.00 diopters and astigmatism.

After 60 days of eye exercises, I had improved to -1.25/-1.00 and completely eradicating my astigmatism. They don't make glasses weaker than -1.00 diopter of corrective power, so this was good enough for me!
It took longer than the 30 days I had hoped for, but then again this is the only NATURAL eyesight improvement method known to man. It's cheap, safe and non-invasive. And there's no denying I saw gradual but overall dramatic eyesight improvement within those first 30 days.
If you have a minute, read on for all the details of my eye exercise training, or just jump straight to thecourse website where you can download the same eye exercises I used and begin your own training right now.

What Are Eye Exercises?

Eye exercises are flexing and relaxing routines designed to stimulate integral eye muscles for 20 minutes per day. The aim is to use your eyes in ways that modern everyday life cause you to forget. It overcomes laziness (wearing glasses or contacts all day long) and re-trains your eyes and cognitive vision to perform better, leading to better vision without glasses.
Within days, you should notice improvements in your natural vision. Things can begin to appear crisper and sharper. Depending upon how bad your vision problems are to begin with, it may take just one month or several months to reach your vision goal. And once you have achieved healthy vision without glasses, you can stop doing eye exercises. (Although it is advised you do one 20-minute session a month to maintain your vision health.)
Eye exercises are the most compelling tool we have for natural vision improvement. and I've studied many eye exercise courses and found numerous variations you can use to combat your nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or aging vision. These eye exercises can't treat strabismus, glaucoma, or any other structural eye disorder.

My Starting Eyesight

Before starting eye exercises, my prescription was -3.25 diopters (left) and -3.00 diopters (right) with astigmatism. That is about 20/150 vision (or moderate nearsightedness) and it was my goal to reach 20/40 or better.
I understood that I was probably middle-of-the-range in terms of my poor vision. I had worn glasses almost permanently for the last 15 years (since I was a 10-year-old girl in school). I wore my glasses all day at the computer. And I was never able to wear contact lenses; I was too squeamish for that (the same reason I always ran from the idea of laser eye surgery).

Days 1-3

The first couple of days, I performed the eye exercises at home for 20 minutes, then rested my eyes for 5 minutes afterwards. At first I felt no different. But on the third day, I was sitting in my living room without my glasses on when I suddenly realized I could read some of the book titles on the shelf at the other side of the room! This was the first sign that something was changing.

Days 4-21

As the days went by I experienced more and more flashes of clear vision. I tried to go without my glasses as much as possible, and it was during those times that my natural vision started working a lot harder than usual. I could suddenly make out all the leaves in the trees, or read credits on the TV from across the room.
I was also able to measure my improvement based on what I could read on the eye chart that came with the course. Three weeks into my training I could read the first, second, third, fourth and fifth rows on the eye chart from 12 feet away. This was a huge improvement!

Days 22-30

As day 30 approached, I knew that I could easily claim a dramatic improvement in my vision. However I also knew I wasn't going to reach my goal of 20/40 vision in under one month. That was slightly disappointing but I faced the fact that my vision would continue to improve with training and it was only a matter of time.

Days 31-44

By day 31, I was wearing my old full-strength glasses to drive when I started getting pounding headaches. I felt like I was going cross-eyed. I finally decided this was my cue to see my optometrist and get an updated pair of lenses.
After an extensive eye exam, she gave me the result. "Good news, your prescription is reduced," she said. That was a first for me in 15 years! My left eye was now -2.25 diopters, my right eye at -2.00 diopters, and my astigmatism had reduced as well. Amazingly, I had eliminated 1 diopter of correction off each eye in a few weeks of training.
Looking back at my prescription records, that was about SEVEN YEARS worth of visual deterioration. For me, it was official: you CAN improve your eyesight naturally.

 Days 45-60

I kept going with my daily eye exercises. By day 60, I was in a very good place with my eyesight: I could sit 20 feet away from the eye chart and read the bottom line ("made in China" - no not that line...) I believed I had reached my goal of 20/40 visual acuity and just needed one more optometrist visit to prove it.
After another extensive eye exam, I got the good news: my left eye was now -1.25 diopters, and my right eye -1.00. Below this level, you don't need glasses. Indeed, they don't make glasses weaker than -1.00 diopter. And while my left eye was slightly weaker than my right eye, this is to be expected and affects everyone to some degree (even people with good eyesight).
My nearsightedness was all but eliminated. What's more, I had completely eradicated my astigmatism. Result!

The Bottom Line:

Four years ago I went from being a long term sufferer of nearsightedness, to having clear vision without glasses, in precisely two months. Now I get to do all kinds of outdoor activities without glasses, something I had only ever dreamed of until that point.

My eyesight improved from 20/150 acuity to 20/40 acuity completely naturally - without any expensive laser treatment and the serious risks associated with it. In maintaining healthy vision habits and doing a 20-minute tone-up once a month, this has been a sustained improvement in my vision.
And I'm pretty disgusted that no optometrist ever told me about it.
